Christmas in Ho Chi Minh City is a working day, not a public holiday, yet the city celebrates it loudly, above all on the evening of 24 December. In 2026, Christmas Eve falls on a Thursday and Christmas Day on a Friday, so offices and banks keep weekday hours, and the day off comes a week later, on Friday 1 January 2027. Downtown is strung with lights, the churches fill, and the roads around them slow to a crawl. We are a 12-minute walk from the pink church, so this guide is written from the neighborhood.
Is Christmas a Public Holiday in Vietnam?
No. The US Library of Congress, in its comparison of national holiday laws in five Asian countries, notes that Vietnam’s public holidays are set by Article 112 of its 2019 Labor Code, and that of the five countries compared, “only South Korea makes Christmas a public holiday.” Wikipedia’s list of public holidays in Vietnam shows New Year’s Day on 1 January, Tết Dương lịch, as a one-day public holiday.
For expats, 24 and 25 December run like any other Thursday and Friday. Offices and banks open, and local schools keep their timetable unless your school says otherwise. International schools set their own winter breaks, so check the calendar. Then comes a long weekend: 1 January 2027 is a Friday.

Where to See the Christmas Lights
The center of the display is the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, scaffolding and all. Vietnam News reported in December 2025 that an LED system totaling 1,000 km in length lit the cathedral every evening that season, until 5 January 2026. The 2026 dates had not been announced when we wrote this, so treat last year as a guide, not a timetable.
A later Vietnam News report, republished by The Star on 23 December 2025, found the area around the cathedral “packed even before sunset.” It names the decorated spots a few steps away: the Central Post Office, Book Street and the Diamond Plaza mall, whose rooftop takes in the whole cathedral. Malls and cafés in the city center and on the Nguyễn Huệ pedestrian plaza were decorated too, and on Phạm Thế Hiển Street in District 8, a Catholic neighborhood, houses and churches put up Nativity scenes, lights and even fake snow.
Our walkable one-day District 1 itinerary describes Nguyễn Huệ as a 900-meter pedestrian boulevard from the People’s Committee building to the Saigon River that in the early evening “fills with families, skateboarders, students photographing each other, and coffee vendors.” For the rest of the city, see our list of things to do in Ho Chi Minh City.
Christmas Eve at Tân Định Church
Our end of District 1 has its own Christmas landmark: Tân Định Church, the pink church at 289 Hai Bà Trưng Street. Our guide to visiting Tân Định Church has the checked details: pink inside and out since 1957, a working parish with Mass early every morning and again every evening, and every Mass in Vietnamese. It was completed and inaugurated on 16 December 1876, so this December marks 150 years.
The parish already holds seven Masses on an ordinary Sunday, and Hai Bà Trưng in front of it is a busy road at any hour, so expect a fuller church and slower traffic on Christmas Eve. If you mainly want the photo, which is taken from across Hai Bà Trưng on the market side, come on a weekday morning earlier in December, inside the visitor hours the guide lists.
Notre-Dame Cathedral During Its Restoration
The cathedral has been under restoration since 2017. The December 2025 Vietnam News report says the project, first scheduled to finish in 2021, was delayed by COVID-19 and the challenges of heritage conservation, and “may now extend to 2027 or even later.” Our itinerary notes that the interior is not open to general visitors, though Mass continues for the congregation, and Vietnam News described the two new crosses on display inside for parishioners to view. For a visitor, the exterior, the square and the Central Post Office opposite are the stop; Christmas Mass arrangements for 2026 are the archdiocese’s to announce.
Christmas Mass Times and Etiquette for Non-Catholics
Each parish announces its Christmas Mass times in December, and no 2026 times were published when we wrote this. At Tân Định, our guide notes, the parish announces times for major feast days in its notices. We could not confirm any English-language Christmas Mass for 2026. Non-Catholics can attend quietly as part of the congregation; the rules of any working church apply:
- Cover shoulders and knees. No shorts or sleeveless tops; a light shirt or scarf in your bag solves it.
- Arrive before it starts and stay until it ends. Sit toward the back.
- Phone silent, voice low, no photos during Mass. Courtyard photos before or after are fine.
- Stay seated during Communion. Communion is for Catholics, so let people step past you.
Getting Around on Christmas Eve: Traffic and Grab
On a working Thursday, the evening rush meets the crowds heading downtown. Grab fares follow demand, so expect higher prices and longer waits near Nguyễn Huệ and the churches from early evening.
- Walk the downtown part. The cathedral, the Central Post Office, Book Street and Nguyễn Huệ are a short walk apart.
- Book your ride a block or two from the crowd. A driver cannot reach a pickup pin in a packed square.
- Cross steadily. Our itinerary’s advice holds: “Walk at a steady, predictable pace and do not stop.”
- Mind your phone. Wear bags on the inside shoulder and keep phones away from the roadside.
Christmas Dinner, December Weather and What to Wear
If a Christmas dinner out matters to you, reserve it well ahead, confirm it the day before, and choose somewhere within walking distance of the lights.
December is the start of the dry season. Our guide to how Saigon’s climate affects skin and hair puts it at December to April, when “humidity falls, mornings can feel genuinely cool, and the air-conditioning contrast is sharper.” UV stays high in every season. Pack a light layer for air-conditioned malls, sunscreen, a scarf for Mass, and a richer moisturizer: the guide notes skin often turns tight and flaky by January.
An Hour of Calm Before or After
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are ordinary opening days for Chạm Spa, so normal hours apply: 09:00–21:00. Our page on what time spas open and the last start times sets the cut-offs: a 90-minute treatment must start by 19:30, a 60-minute one by 20:00 and a 30-minute head spa by 20:30. From 17:00 is the busiest stretch, so book an evening slot a day ahead, or take the calmer afternoon before the lights.
A 30-minute Basic Herbal Head Spa is 120,000 ₫ and done fully clothed, which suits an evening already dressed for Mass. A 60-minute Intensive Foot Massage is 290,000 ₫. For two, our guide to booking a spa visit for two compares the 150-minute Couple Spa Retreat, 1,400,000 ₫ for both of you and starting by 18:30, with two separate treatments at the same hour.
If You Are Giving a Christmas Gift
For a colleague, a host or a friend, an experience is one option among many. Chạm Spa’s digital gift card, which comes in a Christmas edition design, is worth 300,000 ₫ to 5,000,000 ₫ and valid for 12 months on any treatment. Order it on WhatsApp or Zalo and pay by bank transfer, with an optional golden gift wrap for 50,000 ₫. Because it is digital, family abroad can send one to someone in Saigon.

Christmas in Ho Chi Minh City, in Short
Treat Christmas in Ho Chi Minh City as a festive working week: offices open on the 24th and 25th, lights and crowds downtown, busy churches on Christmas Eve, and the real day off on 1 January. Plan around the traffic, check Mass times in early December, and book any quiet hour ahead. The bigger holiday follows: Tết 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, and our guide to visiting Vietnam during Tết explains what closes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Christmas in Saigon
Is Christmas in Ho Chi Minh City a Public Holiday?
No. Vietnam’s public holidays are set by Article 112 of the 2019 Labor Code, and Christmas is not one of them. In 2026, 24 and 25 December are an ordinary Thursday and Friday. New Year’s Day, Friday 1 January 2027, is the public holiday.
Where Can You See Christmas Lights in Saigon?
Around the Notre-Dame Cathedral, lit with 1,000 km of LEDs in the 2025 season, and a few steps away at the Central Post Office, Book Street, the Diamond Plaza mall and the malls and cafés on Nguyễn Huệ. Phạm Thế Hiển Street in District 8 decorates too. The 2026 dates are not yet announced.
Can Non-Catholics Attend Christmas Mass in Saigon?
Yes, quietly, as part of the congregation. Cover your shoulders and knees, arrive early, sit toward the back, take no photos during Mass, and stay seated during Communion. At Tân Định Church, every Mass is in Vietnamese.
Can You Go Inside Notre-Dame Cathedral at Christmas?
Probably not as a sightseer. It has been under restoration since 2017, with work that may run to 2027 or later, and the interior is closed to general visitors while Mass continues for the congregation. Check the archdiocese’s December notices.
When Are the Christmas Mass Times at Tan Dinh Church Announced?
In December. The parish announces times for major feast days in its notices rather than in its regular schedule. On ordinary weekdays there is Mass early every morning and again every evening, all in Vietnamese.
