How to get rid of back acne: use a benzoyl peroxide wash and leave it on for a few minutes, shower and change soon after you sweat, wear loose clothes, keep your hands off, and give it six to eight weeks. That is the home care the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends for mild back acne, and in Saigon’s heat the sweat-and-friction part matters as much as the wash. Deep, painful or scarring spots are a dermatologist’s job.
Why Back Acne Is So Common in Saigon
Back acne forms the way facial acne does: oil, dead skin cells and debris block a pore. Our guide to skincare in Saigon’s humidity explains that this climate feeds all three: sebum production rises with skin temperature, humidity slows the shedding of surface cells, and pollution adds material from outside. People who had clear skin in a temperate country, it notes, often develop congestion within months of moving here, “typically along the jaw, the sides of the nose and across the back and shoulders.”
- Sweat that stays put. Our guide to training in Saigon’s heat explains that in rainy-season humidity sweat drips instead of evaporating, and hard training commonly costs one to two liters an hour.
- Friction. A backpack on a motorbike, a tight synthetic gym shirt. AAD warns that “anything that rubs against your back can irritate your skin, causing back acne to flare.”
- Staying in sweaty clothes. A damp shirt after the ride to work, or gym kit worn home.
- Skin you cannot reach. As the page for our back cleansing, exfoliation and extraction treatment puts it, the back “sweats under a shirt or a backpack all day, and sunscreen lands on it unevenly.”
How to Get Rid of Back Acne: The Daily Routine Dermatologists Recommend
AAD says you may see clearer skin by treating it yourself if you have a few blemishes, if it started recently, or if you have whiteheads, blackheads and pimples but “nothing that’s painful or goes deep into the skin.” Its guide to treating back acne at home sets out this routine:
- Use a benzoyl peroxide wash, and wait. It “works best if left on the back for two to five minutes,” partly because skin is thicker on the back than on the face. A 5.3% product “is less likely to cause irritated skin, dryness, or peeling.”
- Rinse it off completely. “Benzoyl peroxide is known to bleach fabrics,” and rinsing “prevents bleached clothes, sheets, and towels.”
- Add a second ingredient if needed. An adapalene 0.1% gel alongside “can improve your results.” AAD’s advice for acne that will not clear also lists salicylic acid, which “eases inflammation and unclogs pores.”
- Shower and change soon after sweating. If a shower has to wait, AAD suggests “an oil-free cleansing wipe.”
- Wear loose cotton or sweat-wicking fabric, and wash workout clothes after each use.
- Take the bag off your back. AAD suggests you “swap a backpack for a handheld bag.” On a motorbike, the space under the seat does the same job.
- Keep your hands off. “Resist the temptation to pick and pop acne, even on your back.”
- Use sunscreen wherever the sun reaches, one that is “non-comedogenic, SPF 30, broad-spectrum, and water resistant.” AAD warns that “the sun’s rays tend to darken acne and cause it to last longer.”
Fast, Overnight or in a Week? How Long Back Acne Really Takes
Google’s suggestions for this search include “fast,” “overnight” and “in a week.” No routine works that quickly. AAD says that if treatment works, “you may start to see results in six to eight weeks,” and “complete clearing can take three or four months.”
Two habits slow things down. Switching products: “using a different product every few days can also irritate your skin, causing new breakouts.” And over-washing: “washing more than twice a day can irritate your skin, making acne worse.” Keep one routine for two months, and have someone photograph your back on day one; nobody can judge their own back in a mirror.
What Makes Back Acne Worse: Scrubbing, Picking and Heavy Oils
Scrubbing. A grimy back after a hot day invites a hard scrub, but AAD says “abrasive scrubs can worsen acne,” and that “when washing your back and applying acne treatment, you want to be gentle.” A rough loofah is exactly the friction to avoid.
Picking. AAD warns that if you “pick, pop, or squeeze acne, you increase your risk of getting a scar.” On your back, you cannot even see what you are doing.
Rich products. AAD notes that a product containing oil, “such as cocoa butter or shea butter,” applied to “your face, back, or chest” can clog pores. Choose lotions and sunscreens labeled “non-comedogenic” or “oil-free.” One habit of our own: wash your back after rinsing out your conditioner, not before.
Marks, Scars and Bumps That Are Not Acne
Not every bump on a back is acne. This table suggests what to do next; it is not a diagnosis.
| What you see | What it may be | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Blackheads and small bumps that do not hurt | Mild acne, congested pores | The routine above, for six to eight weeks |
| A few red pimples, none deep | Mild to moderate acne | The same routine, adding adapalene or salicylic acid if needed |
| Deep, painful lumps | Severe acne (nodules or cysts) | A dermatologist |
| Small, itchy red bumps in clusters on the upper back and chest | Possibly fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis) | A doctor, who may prescribe antifungal treatment |
| Bumps a day or two after shaving or waxing | Possibly ingrown hairs, explained in our men’s skin and grooming guide | Leave them; scrubbing harder inflames the follicle further |
| Flat dark marks where spots were | Dark spots left after acne | Sunscreen, clear the acne, be patient |
| Pitted or raised scars | Acne scarring, including keloids | A dermatologist |
A mark and a scar are different things. A mark is a change of color where a spot was; AAD’s guide to clearing acne in darker skin tones says these dark spots “can last much longer than the acne,” and that getting rid of the acne removes their cause. A scar is a change in the skin itself, pitted or raised. AAD’s advice covers both: “Prevent dark spots and scars by treating acne early.”
When to See a Dermatologist Instead
Home care is for mild back acne. AAD is direct: “Anyone who has deep, painful acne on their back (or anywhere else) will need a dermatologist’s help.” See one if:
- spots are deep, painful or lumpy: cysts and nodules, which AAD calls “deep blemishes that can leave scars when they clear”;
- your acne is leaving scars, or dark marks that worry you;
- you see no difference after six to eight weeks of a consistent routine;
- the bumps itch and keep coming back. Cleveland Clinic’s overview of fungal acne says “fungal acne can be itchy and acne vulgaris isn’t,” that it is more likely in a hot, humid climate, and that you should talk to a provider about “any itchy breakouts that don’t go away.”
A dermatologist can prescribe what no shop or spa sells, including isotretinoin, which only a doctor can decide on. In AAD’s words, “virtually every type of acne can be successfully treated” with a dermatologist’s help.
Where a Spa Fits: Congested Pores and Rough Texture
The back is the skin you can neither see nor reach, which is the case for giving it a session of its own. Our 80-minute treatment for a congested, rough-feeling back, Ultimate Back Rejuvenation, costs 600,000 ₫: deep cleansing, exfoliation, extractions and a nourishing mask, for the back only. Its page is plain about the limits: “It is a spa treatment, not acne treatment.” Clogged pores and small bumps are what it suits, while “painful or cystic spots, breakouts that scar, and acne that keeps returning deserve a dermatologist.” Given AAD’s warning about scrubbing, a back full of sore, inflamed spots should see a doctor before any exfoliation.
- Extractions are included. Blackheads and clogged pores on your back are cleared during the session. Products are not listed; ask if you have an allergy.
- Medication and pregnancy first. Tell the spa before booking if you are pregnant or use isotretinoin or prescription retinoids, so the team can confirm whether the session suits you. Mention an adapalene gel too: it is a retinoid.
- Shaving and sun. No shaving or waxing your back within 24 hours either side. Newly exfoliated skin burns more easily, so cover your back or use sunscreen for the first few days. A sunburned back waits until it has fully settled; our article on what you can book with a sunburn explains why scrubs wait longest.
- Events. Book two or three days ahead, not the same morning. For a wedding, our wedding skin preparation timeline allows nothing new within four weeks of the day, so try the treatment more than a month before the earliest ceremony.
If your arms and legs are rough too, the 60-minute head-to-toe Full Body Scrub covers the whole body for 400,000 ₫. For breakouts on your face, our Acne Care Treatment for facial breakouts (60 minutes, 350,000 ₫) includes gentle extraction. Our page of body skin treatments in District 1 compares all four side by side.
How to Get Rid of Back Acne, in Short
Back acne in Saigon is ordinary acne made worse by sweat and friction. Wash with benzoyl peroxide, shower after sweating, dress loose, lose the backpack, keep your hands off, and wait six to eight weeks. Deep, painful, scarring or itchy, recurring spots go to a dermatologist. A spa session for the back supports congested pores and rough texture; it is not acne treatment, and its own page says so.
We are at 82/20A Mạc Đĩnh Chi in Tân Định Ward, District 1. Open every day, 09:00–21:00. Book online through Fresha, or on Zalo or WhatsApp at 0986 837 471.
Frequently Asked Questions About Back Acne
How to Get Rid of Back Acne Fast: Is One Week Enough?
No. AAD says results may start to show in six to eight weeks, and complete clearing can take three or four months. A week is enough to start the routine and drop the habits that make it worse.
Is It Safe to Pop Pimples on Your Back?
Leave them alone. AAD advises resisting the temptation to pick and pop acne, even on your back, and says picking, popping or squeezing raises your risk of a scar.
Does Benzoyl Peroxide Bleach Towels and Shirts?
Yes. AAD says benzoyl peroxide is known to bleach fabrics, and recommends rinsing it off after two to five minutes to protect clothes, sheets and towels. Keep an old towel for your back while you use it.
Does Riding a Motorbike in Saigon Make Back Acne Worse?
It can add to it. A hot ride traps sweat under your shirt, and a backpack rubs the whole way; AAD says anything that rubs against your back can make back acne flare. Carry the bag elsewhere, and shower and change soon after.
Should You Put Sunscreen on a Back With Acne?
Yes, wherever the sun reaches. AAD recommends a non-comedogenic, broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30, and says the sun tends to darken acne and make it last longer. It matters even more for a few days after an exfoliating treatment, when skin burns more easily.
Do Dark Marks Left by Back Acne Fade on Their Own?
They can take a long time. AAD notes that the dark spots acne leaves can last much longer than the acne, and that clearing the acne removes their cause. Keep the sun off them, do not pick new spots, and see a dermatologist if they bother you.
Can You Book a Spa Back Treatment While Taking Isotretinoin?
Tell the spa first. Chạm Spa’s back treatment page asks guests who use isotretinoin or prescription retinoids, and anyone pregnant, to say so before booking so the team can confirm whether the session suits them. Your dermatologist’s advice on exfoliation comes first.
If Chạm Spa has looked after you, it helps other guests to hear about it. Leave a review
