Does scalp massage help hair growth? The two studies usually cited do not show that it does. The trial gave nine Japanese men with no obvious hair loss four minutes of device massage a day for 24 weeks, and found no significant difference from the untouched side of their heads. The other is a self-report survey. Shedding after an illness, stress or a birth often stops on its own, and pattern hair loss has medical treatments. A head spa is for a clean scalp, a looser neck and half an hour of quiet.
Does Scalp Massage Help Hair Growth? What the Two Studies Measured
The first paper is a 2016 study of standardized scalp massage and hair thickness in the journal Eplasty. Nine Japanese men aged 25 to 46, who “showed no obvious hair loss,” had a spot on one side of the scalp massaged with a device for 4 minutes a day for 24 weeks, with the matching spot on the other side as the control.
Average hair thickness on the massaged side rose from 0.085 mm to 0.092 mm against its own starting point. Yet thickness, density and growth rate all showed “no significant difference between the massage area and the control area,” and hair count on the massaged side dipped at 12 weeks. The study was partly funded by a company that two of its authors are affiliated with, and its introduction concedes that the effect of scalp massage on hair growth “has not been evaluated in sound clinical trials and its effect remains unclear.”
The second is a 2019 survey of people trying scalp massage for pattern hair loss, published in Dermatology and Therapy. People searching online for hair loss treatments read about, and watched a video of, a routine of two 20-minute hand massages a day, then were asked once how it had gone. Of the 327 who tried it, for a median of 11 to 20 minutes a day over an average of 7.4 months, 68.9% rated their own hair as stable or better.
The authors name the limits: “no placebo or control group,” self-reported data that “do not allow for objective evaluation of compliance or efficacy,” and “choice-supportive bias,” the habit of crediting a treatment you chose. The lead author also discloses operating a commercial website that “intends to provide education about and services for some of the concepts in this paper.” A survey like this cannot show that massage changed anyone’s hair.
Scalp Massage Claims and What the Evidence Shows
| Claim | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| “Massage brings back hair you have lost” | Neither study shows it. The 2016 men had no obvious hair loss, and their hair count did not rise; it dipped at 12 weeks. |
| “It makes hair thicker” | Thicker against each man’s own baseline, but no significant difference from the unmassaged side. |
| “It boosts blood flow to the roots” | The 2016 authors offer blood flow as one possible explanation, but it “was not evaluated in the current study.” |
| “Most people who try it see results” | The 68.9% are self-ratings by people who chose the routine, with no control group. |
| “A head spa treats hair loss” | None of Chạm Spa’s four head spa tiers is a hair loss treatment, and the NHS says to see a GP “before thinking about going to a commercial hair clinic.” |
Shedding or Hair Loss? The Types and the Right Next Step
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) separates excessive hair shedding from true hair loss: shedding far more than the normal 50 to 100 hairs a day is called telogen effluvium, while hair loss “occurs when something stops the hair from growing.”
- Shedding after a shock to the body. Giving birth, a high fever, an operation, an illness, losing 20 pounds or more, heavy stress or stopping birth-control pills can trigger it a few months later, the AAD says. It often stops on its own, with hair tending to regain its normal fullness within six to nine months, though it can last while the stress does. Next step: time, and a doctor if you are worried.
- Pattern hair loss. The NHS guide to hair loss calls male and female pattern baldness permanent and says it “usually runs in the family.” Next step: a doctor.
- Other causes. The AAD names an overreacting immune system, some drugs and harsh hair-care products, and the NHS adds iron deficiency, weight loss and cancer treatment to illness and stress among causes of temporary hair loss. Next step: a doctor.
Timing can mislead: start massaging in the middle of a shed, and the recovery the AAD expects anyway looks like a result. After a birth, our guide to pregnancy and postpartum recovery in a hot climate suggests discussing the traditional ở cữ limits on hair washing with your doctor. For men, our men’s skin and grooming guide, which covers thinning hair, agrees: “The only interventions with real evidence are medical.”
What a Head Spa Honestly Does
Our overview of the four head spa tiers and their prices puts it plainly: a head spa “is not a hair wash. It is scalp and neck work.”
- Cleansing. The 30-minute Basic Herbal Head Spa opens with a botanical wash for “the build-up of sweat, sunscreen and city dust that accumulates fast in this climate.” Our guide to why scalps turn oily faster in Saigon’s heat notes that home shampooing “removes surface oil well and buildup poorly.”
- Tension. Our head spa page lists “a tight, tender scalp from stress, tied-back hair or long hours of concentration” among the reasons people book.
- Quiet. Guests book the 45-minute Relaxing Zen Head Spa, its page says, “when the goal is to stop thinking.”
None of it has been shown to change your hair. Our explainer on the difference between a hair spa and a head spa notes that no tier lists a step that treats the hair fiber, and our comparison of a Japanese-style head spa and Vietnamese gội đầu dưỡng sinh says neither treats hair loss or any scalp condition.
Chạm Spa’s Four Head Spa Tiers: Cleansing and Calm, Not Treatment
All four are done reclined and fully clothed; the two longer tiers add work on the face.
| Tier | Duration | Price | Where the time goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Herbal Head Spa | 30 min | 120,000 ₫ | Herbal rinse, scalp massage, pressure points at the base of the skull |
| Relaxing Zen Head Spa | 45 min | 210,000 ₫ | Adds herbal steam, scalp reflexology and a neck and shoulder release |
| Intensive Herbal Head Spa & Facial Care | 60 min | 300,000 ₫ | Scalp work plus facial care, “care rather than correction” |
| Cham Signature Head Spa | 75 min | 450,000 ₫ | The full scalp sequence plus an advanced facial; book ahead |
Each tier has a 14-session package priced at ten sessions, from 1,200,000 ₫ to 4,500,000 ₫: buy one for a routine you enjoy, never as a course for your hair, and ask how long it stays valid. First time? Our guide to what happens at a Saigon hair wash walks you through it.
Is a Head Spa Worth It If You Are Losing Hair?
Yes, for a clean scalp and half an hour of calm. No, if it replaces a doctor or is meant to change what your hair is doing: no Chạm Spa tier is sold as a hair loss treatment.
If you are shedding, tell the therapist about any scalp condition, psoriasis or eczema, recent coloring or allergies to herbal preparations, so products “can be adjusted or avoided.” Mention a sensitive scalp too, so the pressure can be adjusted. If the scalp is “flaking, sore or broken rather than merely itchy,” our hair spa explainer says to see a doctor first.
And if you wear your hair pulled back tight, the AAD lists “hairstyles that pull on the hair” among common causes of hair loss: a question for a dermatologist, not for more massage.
What to Do If You Are Worried About Hair Loss
- Notice the pattern. More hairs than normal on your pillow or brush may be shedding, the AAD says; a receding hairline, a bald patch in the center of the scalp or gradual thinning points to hereditary hair loss.
- Look back three months. Shedding often follows a birth, a high fever, an operation or heavy stress by months.
- Keep taking your medicines. The AAD warns that “serious side effects can occur if you immediately stop a treatment or drug,” so ask the prescriber first.
- See a doctor before any hair clinic. The NHS says to see a GP if you are worried. The AAD adds that a dermatologist can tell shedding from hair loss, and that “the sooner treatment begins, the better the prognosis.”
- Ask about treatments with evidence. For pattern baldness the NHS names finasteride and minoxidil; women should not use finasteride, and neither works for everyone.
- Keep the head spa for what it is. Calm and a clean scalp, alongside medical advice, never instead of it.
Does Scalp Massage Help Hair Growth? The Short Answer
Not on the evidence so far. One small trial in men without hair loss found no significant difference from an untouched control, and one survey of people who chose a massage routine had no control at all. Shedding often stops on its own, and pattern hair loss has treatments a doctor can discuss. Book a head spa for a clean scalp and some quiet, and a doctor for thinning hair. If it becomes a habit, our guide to how often to book a head spa, by scalp and goal helps set the interval.

Frequently Asked Questions About Scalp Massage and Hair
Does Scalp Massage Help Hair Growth If You Do It Every Day at Home?
Neither study shows it. The 2016 trial’s daily device massage made no significant difference against the untreated side, and the 2019 survey’s results were judged only by the people massaging. It is free and can feel good; it is not a hair loss treatment.
Does Scalp Massage Help Hair Growth in Women?
There is even less to go on: the 2016 trial enrolled only men, and 29 of the 327 survey participants who tried the massage identified as female. The NHS says minoxidil can be used for female pattern baldness and that women should not use finasteride.
How Many Hairs a Day Is It Normal to Lose?
Between 50 and 100, say both the NHS and the AAD. Shedding far more than that every day is what the AAD calls excessive hair shedding, and it usually follows a stressful event by a few months.
Is Hair Shedding After Giving Birth Normal?
Yes. The AAD says it can start about two months after the birth, peaks at about four months and is “normal and temporary,” with hair tending to regain its normal fullness within six to nine months. If you are worried, see a doctor.
Can Scalp Massage Replace Minoxidil or Finasteride?
No. The NHS names finasteride and minoxidil as the main treatments for male pattern baldness; massage is not on that list. They only work for as long as they are used, so do not swap one for massage without asking your doctor.
Why Are There Hairs in the Basin After a Head Spa?
Daily shedding is normal: up to 100 hairs a day, the NHS says. In the 2016 trial, hair count on the massaged side dipped at 12 weeks, and the authors suggested the massage may have loosened hairs already in their resting phase, a temporary drop. If you shed noticeably more than usual between washes too, see a doctor.
Does Chạm Spa Offer Any Treatment for Hair Loss?
No. Our four head spa tiers, from 120,000 ₫ for 30 minutes to 450,000 ₫ for 75, are cleansing and relaxation treatments. For thinning or shedding, we would rather you saw a doctor.
