A Vietnam hair wash, or gội đầu, comes in two kinds: a salon wash of 15 to 25 minutes, sitting with your head tipped back into a basin, and a spa head spa of 30 to 75 minutes, lying back, usually fully clothed, while an herbal wash frames a long scalp, neck and shoulder massage. In Ho Chi Minh City the salon version costs about 50,000–100,000 ₫. At Chạm Spa in District 1 the head spa runs from 120,000 ₫ to 450,000 ₫, and you leave with damp hair unless you ask for more drying.
What a Vietnam Hair Wash Actually Is
Gội đầu means washing your hair, and two different services sit behind the word on Saigon’s signs. A salon sells a wash: our Vietnamese guide to salon washes describes a few minutes of scalp rubbing between two rounds of shampoo, and that is all the “relaxing” the price buys. A spa sells gội đầu dưỡng sinh, where the wash is the frame and most of the time goes on massage through the scalp, the base of the skull and the shoulders. If what you saw online was a long wash lying down, that is the spa kind.
Dưỡng sinh means roughly “nurturing life,” a phrase our guide to Vietnamese spa etiquette and the ideas behind it unpacks. How a Japanese-style head spa differs is covered in our comparison of a head spa and gội đầu dưỡng sinh. If a menu says “hair spa,” read what hair spa and head spa mean on a Saigon menu first, because the words can also mean a conditioning mask.
Your First Hair Wash, Step by Step
At Chạm Spa a session follows the steps each tier’s page lists.
- Speak up before you lie down. Mention anything from the checklist further down. The 75-minute Signature opens with a consultation “longer than in the other tiers.”
- Lie back. You recline at the basin with your neck supported. The 30-, 45- and 60-minute tiers are done fully clothed (“nothing here requires undressing or lying face-down,” says the Basic page); for the 75-minute Signature, ask when booking.
- The herbal wash. A botanical rinse, “worked in slowly rather than rushed,” lifts “the build-up of sweat, sunscreen and city dust.” Say so if the water is too hot. The 45-minute Zen tier then adds herbal steam before the massage.
- Scalp massage and pressure points. Sustained work across the scalp, then along the base of the skull and into the neck, “the junction where scalp tension and neck tension meet.” If it is too firm, “nhẹ hơn” means lighter.
- Neck and shoulders. The work runs “down into the shoulders,” says our head spa overview; the Zen tier ends with a neck and shoulder release.
- Facial care, in the longer tiers. The 60-minute tier adds facial cleansing and care; the 75-minute Signature, an advanced facial.
- Rinse and finish. All four tier pages say your hair will still be damp when you leave. Ask for extra drying (sấy khô) before you get up.
- Sit up slowly. Guests “routinely fall asleep,” the Zen page says, and “standing up quickly undoes some of the calm.”
Salon Wash vs Spa Head Spa: Time, Setting and Price
Our Vietnamese guide to salon washes puts the going rate in Ho Chi Minh City at 15 to 25 minutes for 50,000–100,000 ₫, as of August 2026. The setting is the salon standard: Wikipedia’s article on hair washing says that in the more common backward style “the client sits in a chair, and leans their head back into a sink, with the hairdresser standing behind them.” The hands reach your scalp, and your neck holds the angle.
| Salon wash | Spa head spa | |
|---|---|---|
| On the sign | Gội đầu, gội đầu thư giãn | Gội đầu dưỡng sinh, head spa |
| Position | Usually sitting, head tipped back into a basin | Lying back, neck supported, usually fully clothed |
| Time | 15–25 minutes | 30–75 minutes at Chạm Spa |
| Where the time goes | Mostly washing, with a few minutes of scalp rubbing | Mostly massage: scalp, skull base, neck, shoulders |
| Price | About 50,000–100,000 ₫ (August 2026) | 120,000–450,000 ₫ at Chạm Spa |
| Hair afterwards | Usually dried; some salons only rough-dry | Damp; ask for extra drying |
Extras such as more massage, a product suggested while your hair is wet or a styled blow-dry can raise a salon bill, so ask “Giá này đã gồm những gì?” (what does this price include?) before you sit down. At Chạm Spa each tier’s price is published on its page.
What a Hair Wash Costs at Chạm Spa: The Four Tiers
The tiers differ in length and in what is added; the last column comes from our table of latest start times by treatment length.
| Tier | Time | Price | What it adds | 14-session package | Latest start |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Herbal Head Spa | 30 min | 120,000 ₫ | Herbal rinse, scalp massage, pressure points; no steam, no facial | 1,200,000 ₫ | 20:30 |
| Relaxing Zen Head Spa | 45 min | 210,000 ₫ | Herbal steam and structural scalp reflexology | 2,100,000 ₫ | 20:15 |
| Intensive Herbal Head Spa & Facial Care | 60 min | 300,000 ₫ | Facial cleansing and care | 3,000,000 ₫ | 20:00 |
| Cham Signature Head Spa | 75 min | 450,000 ₫ | The full scalp sequence and an advanced facial | 4,500,000 ₫ | 19:45 |
Each package costs the same as ten single sessions, and no page says how long one stays valid, so ask before you buy. Our overview of the four head spa tiers calls the 30-minute Basic “the easiest introduction,” and our guide to how often a head spa is worth repeating suggests one session on a short trip: the Basic if you are unsure, or the Signature, booked ahead, as an occasion.
First-Timer Tips: Clothes, Lenses, Makeup, Long Hair and the Ride Home
- Clothes and hair. Wear what you arrived in; the 30-, 45- and 60-minute tiers are done fully clothed, and for the 75-minute Signature, ask when booking. Do not wash your hair first: the Basic page calls washing beforehand “pointless.”
- Long hair and extensions. Arrive with your hair untied, as the Zen and Signature pages ask, and mention extensions or colored hair at the start. The longer your hair, the more the extra drying matters.
- Contact lenses. None of our head spa pages mentions them, so bring your case and glasses and ask before the wash. Cleveland Clinic’s tips on avoiding eye infections from contacts warn that water “may contain pathogens or pollutants,” so “be careful not to get any in your eye, especially while wearing contacts.”
- Makeup. It matters only on the two facial tiers; the 60-minute page says to “come without makeup if you can, or allow that it will be removed as part of the treatment.”
- The ride home. Our guide to Saigon’s climate and your scalp notes that a helmet “holds heat against the scalp and prevents any air movement.” Ask for extra drying, or take a Grab car, and make the wash the last thing in your day.
Who Should Skip It, or Tell the Therapist First
The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says in its overview of massage therapy that “the risk of harmful effects from massage therapy appears to be low.” Still, the tier pages ask you to mention:
- A scalp condition such as psoriasis or eczema, so products can be adjusted or avoided.
- Recent coloring or a chemical treatment.
- Allergies to herbal preparations. The herbs are not listed, so ask.
- Sensitivity to heat, since the Zen tier’s steam “can be shortened or skipped.”
- Pregnancy, ideally when you book, so positioning can be made comfortable and the preparations checked.
- Prescription skincare such as retinoids, before either facial tier.
Two things the pages do not list deserve a doctor’s view first: a neck problem, such as an injury or pain when you tip your head back, and recent surgery on the head, face or neck. NCCIH advises: “If you’re unsure whether massage therapy would be appropriate for you, discuss your concerns with your health care provider.” Then tell the therapist before the wash begins.
Nor is a hair wash a treatment. The NHS guidance on dandruff says to see a GP if your scalp is red or swollen, very itchy, or still flaky after at least four weeks of anti-dandruff shampoo, and notes that dandruff “is not caused by poor hygiene.” Thinning hair is a doctor’s question too, as our look at what scalp massage can and cannot do for thinning hair explains.
How to Book a Hair Wash in District 1
Chạm Spa is at 82/20A Mạc Đĩnh Chi in Tân Định Ward, about six minutes on foot from Lê Văn Tám Park. The slash means an alley: house 20A inside alley 82, so give a Grab driver the number and the street and walk in from the mouth of the alley, as our guide to getting ready for a massage or head spa explains.
Book online through Fresha, or message on Zalo or WhatsApp; our guide to booking a spa in District 1 without speaking Vietnamese notes that Zalo “works with a foreign phone number.” The tier pages say you can “walk in, or reserve a time before you arrive,” but evenings and weekends fill first, and the Signature is “the hardest to fit in at short notice.”
A Vietnam Hair Wash, in Short
A salon wash gets your hair clean and dry in under half an hour; a spa head spa gives 30 to 75 minutes to your scalp, neck and shoulders and sends you out with damp hair. For a first try, book the 30-minute Basic late in the day, mention your scalp or neck at the start, and ask for extra drying if a helmet comes next.
We are at 82/20A Mạc Đĩnh Chi in Tân Định Ward, District 1. Open every day, 09:00–21:00. Book online through Fresha, or on Zalo or WhatsApp at 0986 837 471.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Washes in Saigon
How Much Does a Vietnam Hair Wash Cost in Saigon?
A salon wash costs about 50,000–100,000 ₫ in Ho Chi Minh City for 15 to 25 minutes (August 2026). At Chạm Spa a head spa costs 120,000 ₫ for 30 minutes, 210,000 ₫ for 45, 300,000 ₫ for 60 with facial care and 450,000 ₫ for 75.
Is a Hair Wash in Vietnam Done Lying Down or Sitting Up?
At most salons you sit and lean your head back into the basin. A spa head spa is done lying back with your neck supported; at Chạm Spa all four tiers are done reclined, so none involves lying face-down, and the 30-, 45- and 60-minute tiers are done fully clothed (for the 75-minute Signature, ask when booking).
How Long Does a Hair Wash Take at a Saigon Salon Compared With a Spa?
A salon wash takes 15 to 25 minutes, mostly washing and rinsing. A head spa at Chạm Spa takes 30, 45, 60 or 75 minutes, most of it massage.
What Should You Wear to a Hair Wash at a Vietnamese Spa?
Whatever you arrived in: Chạm Spa’s 30-, 45- and 60-minute head spa tiers are done fully clothed; for the 75-minute Signature, ask when booking. Come with your hair unwashed and untied, and without makeup if you have booked one of the two facial tiers.
Can You Keep Contact Lenses In During a Hair Wash?
Taking them out is the safer choice. Cleveland Clinic advises keeping water out of your eyes, especially while wearing contacts. Our head spa pages do not mention lenses, so bring your case and glasses and ask before the wash starts.
Is a Vietnam Hair Wash Safe If You Have a Neck Problem?
Ask your doctor first if you have a neck injury or pain when you tip your head back; NCCIH advises discussing any doubt about massage with a health care provider. Then tell the therapist; at a spa your neck is supported while you lie back.
Can You Walk In for a Hair Wash in District 1 Without Booking?
Yes, when a therapist is free: Chạm Spa’s head spa pages say you can walk in or reserve a time. The spa is open every day, 09:00–21:00. Evenings and weekends fill first, and the 75-minute Signature should be booked ahead.
