Head Spa vs Massage: Which to Book, and When to Have Both

Head Spa vs Massage: Which to Book, and When to Have Both

Head spa vs massage comes down to where your tension sits and what you do afterwards: a head spa works the scalp, the base of the skull and the neck while you lie back, usually fully clothed, and leaves your hair damp; a body massage works the back, legs, arms and shoulders with warm oil and leaves your hair dry. Pick the head spa for a tight or sticky scalp, a first visit or a sunburned back, and the massage for whole-body tension, a knot or dinner straight afterwards. Want both? Book them back to back, or as one 90-minute session.

Head Spa vs Massage: What Each One Is

A head spa is an herbal wash at a basin followed by sustained massage through the scalp, along the base of the skull and down into the shoulders. Our overview of the four head spa tiers puts it plainly: a head spa “is not a hair wash. It is scalp and neck work.” The Vietnamese name is gội đầu dưỡng sinh; our comparison of a head spa and gội đầu dưỡng sinh covers the Japanese-style version, and if a menu says “hair spa,” check what hair spa can mean on a Saigon menu, since it may be a conditioning mask instead.

A body massage is hands-on work on the back, legs, arms, neck and shoulders, lying on a table under a towel. The gentlest version on our menu, Relaxation Massage with Oil, uses warm oil and “long, flowing Swedish-style strokes to calm the whole body rather than target specific knots,” at a light to medium pressure you set. Our guide to the main types of massage and what each is for covers the firmer styles.

The two overlap at the neck. If you cannot decide, you do not have to: our 90-minute ritual that splits its time between massage and head spa exists for exactly that afternoon.

Side by Side: Position, Clothing, Oil, Hair and Price

Head spa Body massage
Position Reclined at a basin Lying on a table under a towel
Clothing Fully clothed in the 30-, 45- and 60-minute tiers; the 75-minute page does not say, so ask Undress to your comfort level in private; only the area being worked on is uncovered
What is used An herbal wash and herbal preparations; the 45-minute tier adds steam Warm oil
What gets worked Scalp, base of the skull, neck and shoulders; the face too in the 60- and 75-minute tiers Back, legs, arms, neck and shoulders
Hair afterwards Damp; ask for extra drying Not washed; say if you want oil kept off the hairline
Time 30, 45, 60 or 75 minutes 60 or 90 minutes
Price at Chạm Spa 120,000 ₫ to 450,000 ₫ 290,000 ₫ for 60 minutes, 430,000 ₫ for 90

The head spa ladder runs from the 30-minute Basic Herbal Head Spa at 120,000 ₫, through the 45-minute Relaxing Zen Head Spa with herbal steam at 210,000 ₫ and a 60-minute tier with facial care at 300,000 ₫, to the 75-minute Cham Signature Head Spa at 450,000 ₫. A head spa is the shorter, cheaper way into a spa afternoon.

When a Head Spa Is the Better Booking

  • Your scalp is the tight part. The head spa overview lists “a tight, tender scalp from stress, tied-back hair or long hours of concentration.” Most people never have their scalp worked on at all.
  • Your scalp feels sticky. In Saigon’s heat, sweat, sunscreen and city dust build up fast, and the herbal wash is worked in slowly rather than rinsed through.
  • You have half an hour. The Basic tier is “short enough to fit into a lunch break.”
  • You would rather not undress. The three shorter tiers are done fully clothed.

It is cleansing and calm, not hair treatment, as our look at what scalp massage does for hair growth explains. Nor is it a salon wash, which is shorter and usually done sitting up; see our guide to the Vietnam hair wash, salon and spa. If you take to it, read how often to book a head spa.

When a Body Massage Is the Better Booking

  • The ache is in your back, hips or legs. A head spa never gets below the shoulders.
  • You have walked all day or just flown in. The relaxation massage page lists “recovery from travel and long days on your feet exploring the city.”
  • You have one stubborn knot. That page is frank: Deep Tissue Massage “addresses it directly; relaxation massage will feel lovely but leave it there.” Deep tissue is 340,000–460,000 ₫ for 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Dinner or a meeting comes straight after. Your hair is not washed, so you leave with it dry.

Are Head Massages Good for You? What the Evidence Says

Probably good for unwinding, low in risk, and not a treatment for anything.

Research on head massage itself is thin. A 2016 study in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science gave 34 female office workers in Korea a 15- or 25-minute scalp massage twice a week for 10 weeks, against a control group that had none, and found significant differences in the stress hormones norepinephrine and cortisol and in blood pressure; heart rate did not change significantly. One small study of regular sessions says nothing about what a single head spa does.

For massage in general, the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says in its overview of massage therapy that “the risk of harmful effects from massage therapy appears to be low,” that massage “may be helpful for neck or shoulder pain, but the benefits may only last for a short time,” and that results on headaches “are not consistent.” Cleveland Clinic’s guide to massage therapy agrees that pain relief “may be short-term, rather than long-term.”

So book either one to feel better for the rest of the day. NCCIH’s advice covers both: “Don’t use massage therapy to postpone seeing a health care provider about a medical problem.” A scalp that is sore, red, flaking heavily or broken needs a doctor first, and so does a headache that is severe, sudden or keeps coming back.

Pregnancy, Sunburn, a First Visit or Dinner After: Which to Pick

  • Pregnant. For a head spa, say so when booking, “so positioning can be made comfortable and herbal preparations checked.” For body work, Pregnancy Massage is side-lying and offered from the second trimester. If your pregnancy is high-risk, check with your doctor or midwife first.
  • Sunburned. Our guide to booking a massage with a sunburn says that with a burned back, a foot massage or the Basic Herbal Head Spa is the easiest booking, “because you stay clothed and the work stays on the feet or the scalp and neck.” Mention the burn anyway, since head spa massage runs into the shoulders.
  • A first visit. The Basic tier’s page says “nothing here requires undressing or lying face-down.” For massage, Cleveland Clinic calls Swedish massage “a good pick for people new to massages,” and our guide to what happens during a massage, from undressing to the finish answers the awkward questions.
  • Dinner or a helmet ride straight after. Choose the massage, or ask for extra drying after a head spa.
  • A scalp condition or recent coloring. Tell the therapist about psoriasis, eczema, recent coloring or an allergy to herbal preparations, “so products can be adjusted or avoided.”

How to Have Both in One Afternoon

  1. Decide which half matters more. Equal time suits a combo; a full hour of massage means booking the two separately.
  2. Book ahead. Evenings and weekends fill first.
  3. Watch the clock. We are open every day from 09:00 to 21:00, so a 90-minute session must start by 19:30.
  4. Arrive with your hair unwashed and untied. The wash is part of the head spa.
  5. Massage first, head spa second. Our combos put scalp and neck work “after body massage when the shoulders have already dropped,” and the same order suits two separate bookings.
  6. Leave time afterwards for extra drying, and book nothing for the minute you walk out.

Where Chạm Spa Fits: A Massage and Head Spa Package in 90 Minutes

Our Signature Relaxation Ritual, half restorative massage and half botanical head spa, is 90 minutes for 450,000 ₫: a 45-minute massage at the pressure you choose, then a 45-minute head spa done reclined, with an herbal wash and scalp massage. Your hair is left damp. It is where our eight retreat combos start on price.

The page is honest about what it is not: “There is no single problem to fix.” It also does the arithmetic. A 60-minute Relaxation Massage with Oil (290,000 ₫) and a 45-minute Relaxing Zen Head Spa (210,000 ₫) booked separately come to 500,000 ₫ for 105 minutes against 450,000 ₫ for the ritual’s 90, so per minute the ritual costs slightly more, and “if you want a full hour of massage, book the two separately.” Note, too, that a 90-minute Relaxation Massage with Oil costs 430,000 ₫, only 20,000 ₫ less. The price barely separates them; the question is whether you want half the time on your scalp. The same arithmetic works for any spa package, and our guide to spa packages lists the questions to ask before you pay.

Booking Time Price Choose it when
Signature Relaxation Ritual 90 min 450,000 ₫ You want body and scalp, equal time, one booking
Relaxation Massage with Oil 90 min 430,000 ₫ You want all 90 minutes on the body, and dry hair afterwards
60-minute massage plus 45-minute Zen head spa 105 min 500,000 ₫ You want a full hour of massage
Quiet Alley Retreat 100 min 500,000 ₫ Your feet need attention too: it adds a pearl foot spa
Signature Neck & Shoulder Recovery Ritual 90 min 480,000 ₫ Your neck and shoulders are the problem

In pregnancy, the ritual’s page points you to the Prenatal Pampering Retreat, 120 minutes for 530,000 ₫, or to Pregnancy Massage. For deep pressure throughout, it suggests Deep Tissue Massage. For pain that is sharp, numb or getting worse, see a doctor rather than book a combo. Looking for a head spa or a massage near you? We are about six minutes on foot from Lê Văn Tám Park.

Head Spa vs Massage, in Short

Choose by where the tension is and what comes next. A tight or sticky scalp, a first visit or a burned back points to the head spa; a sore back, a knot or dinner straight afterwards points to the massage. For both, unhurried, book the 90-minute massage and head spa ritual, or the two back to back for a full hour of massage.

We are at 82/20A Mạc Đĩnh Chi in Tân Định Ward, District 1. Open every day, 09:00–21:00. Book online through Fresha, or on Zalo or WhatsApp at 0986 837 471.

Frequently Asked Questions About Choosing a Head Spa or a Massage

Head Spa vs Massage: Which Is Better for Stiff Shoulders?

A body massage, or a combo built for them. A head spa reaches the shoulders from above; a massage covers them and the upper back directly, and the Signature Neck & Shoulder Recovery Ritual gives that area 90 minutes for 480,000 ₫.

Can You Have a Massage and a Head Spa in the Same Visit?

Yes. Book the Signature Relaxation Ritual, 45 minutes of each for 450,000 ₫, or a 60-minute Relaxation Massage with Oil and a 45-minute Relaxing Zen Head Spa back to back for 500,000 ₫. Per minute the ritual costs slightly more; the separate booking also gives you a full hour of massage.

Should the Massage Come Before the Head Spa?

That is the order the Signature Relaxation Ritual runs in: scalp and neck work comes after body massage, when the shoulders have already dropped. It also puts the herbal wash last, and every head spa tier is designed to finish with the scalp clean rather than coated.

Do You Undress for a Head Spa, a Body Massage or Both?

Not for the 30-, 45- and 60-minute head spa tiers, which are done fully clothed; the 75-minute page does not say, so ask. For a body massage you undress to your comfort level in private and lie under a towel. For a combo, ask when you book how changing works.

Can You Go Straight to Dinner After a Head Spa?

Yes, with damp hair. Every head spa at Chạm Spa includes an herbal wash; ask before you get up if you would like your hair dried further. If dry hair matters more than a clean scalp tonight, book a body massage instead.

Is a Head Spa or a Body Massage Easier for a First Spa Visit?

Both are gentle starts. The 30-minute Basic Herbal Head Spa, at 120,000 ₫, needs no undressing and no lying face-down. Relaxation Massage with Oil is the treatment our therapists most often recommend to guests unsure what to book.

Is a Head Spa Worth Booking If Your Scalp Is Itchy?

If the itch comes from sweat, sunscreen and city dust building up in the heat, the herbal wash may help clear it. If your scalp is flaking heavily, red, sore or broken, see a doctor first, and always mention psoriasis, eczema or recent coloring to the therapist.

If Chạm Spa has looked after you, it helps other guests to hear about it. Leave a review
