Thai massage vs Vietnamese massage comes down to mat or table: Thai massage is done on a floor mat, fully clothed and without oil, while the therapist stretches and compresses you; Vietnamese massage means either traditional tẩm quất, firm acupressure and rhythmic percussion, or, at most day spas, an oil massage on a table. Saigon’s signs advertise both. Choose by what you want done to your body: moved and stretched, pressed and tapped, or left still under long strokes. Chạm Spa does not offer Thai massage; what we do is table and oil.
Thai Massage vs Vietnamese Massage at a Glance
“Vietnamese massage” covers two services, so the table has three columns. The first two follow our side-by-side guide to ten massage styles; the third is our own menu.
| Thai massage | Traditional Vietnamese (tẩm quất) | Day-spa oil massage | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setting | A floor mat; modern versions sometimes use a table | A mat or simple table, often in a curtained bay | A massage table, usually in a private room |
| Clothing | Fully clothed, in loose clothes | Usually clothed, or worked through a towel | Undressed to your comfort level, under a towel |
| Oil | None | Sometimes | Yes, warm oil |
| Technique | Assisted stretching and compression with hands, elbows, knees and feet | Acupressure, then clapping, tapping and chopping | Long, flowing strokes, or slow pressure on one area |
| Pressure | Firm, with joint movement | Firm to very firm | Light to medium; firm to strong for deep tissue |
| Suits | Stiffness and poor flexibility in someone otherwise in good shape | Anyone who wants a strong, local, invigorating session | First-timers, stress, travel fatigue; deep tissue for one stubborn knot |
| Skip it if | Recent surgery or injury, medical fragility, an existing shoulder or hip problem | It is your first massage, you bruise easily, take blood thinners or have a skin condition over the area | You are pregnant (book pregnancy massage instead); mention nut or plant oil allergies first |
Part of the Thai skip list comes from a Cleveland Clinic interview on Thai massage: massage therapist DeBorah Hill says anyone “medically fragile” or recovering from “recent surgery” should not have it, and a shoulder or hip problem may mean waiting, given its emphasis on stretching. For both firm styles, NCCIH’s overview of massage therapy rates the risk of harm as low but records rare serious side effects, “such as a blood clot, nerve injury, or bone fracture,” some involving “vigorous types of massage” or people at higher risk, “such as elderly people.”
What Happens in a Thai Massage
Thai massage is closer to assisted yoga than to lying still. Wikipedia’s article on traditional Thai massage notes that oils and lotions “are generally not used,” that the recipient wears “lightweight and loose clothing,” and that “the body is compressed, pulled, stretched, and rocked.” UNESCO’s entry for Nuad Thai, inscribed on its intangible cultural heritage list in 2019, describes therapists using “their hands, elbows, knees and feet, together with herbal hot compresses,” and traces the practice to village healers whom farmers visited “when they had muscle aches from working in the field.”
Hill describes the traditional form as done “on a mat on the floor,” working from the feet up to the head: legs drawn out from the hip, knees brought toward the chest, hip openers and twists. Because nothing comes off, ask when booking whether the venue provides loose clothing.
What “Vietnamese Massage” Means: Tẩm Quất, or a Table and Oil
The traditional answer is tẩm quất. Our guide to the tẩm quất tradition and its techniques describes thumbs, knuckles and elbows working acupressure points, then “rhythmic clapping, tapping, chopping and drumming” with the edges of the hands, loose fists or cupped palms, loud enough to startle first-timers through a curtain. Cupping (giác hơi) or herbal heat is often added. Shops signed tẩm quất usually take walk-ins; what each kind of massage sign in Vietnam means sorts them from spas and blind massage centers.
The other answer is what most Saigon day spas sell: a table, a private room, warm oil and a towel. Menus split it into thư giãn, gentle and whole-body, and trị liệu, firmer and targeted; how to read those two words on a Saigon spa menu explains them. If a sign says only “Vietnamese massage,” ask which one you are getting.
Which One to Book, by What You Want
Stiffness and poor flexibility. Thai massage’s territory: our types guide rates it above every other style for inflexibility and joint stiffness. If what you really want is firm work on tight muscles, which the same guide says is what most people mean when they ask for Thai, a slow, firm deep tissue session is the closer fit, at 340,000 ₫ for 60 minutes or 460,000 ₫ for 90.
A long walking day. Sore feet and calves call for feet: the Intensive Foot Massage is 60 to 90 minutes for 290,000–430,000 ₫, clothed apart from your feet and lower legs. Back and shoulders call for a body massage; choosing between feet and full body after a day on foot works it through.
A first massage. Book a day-spa oil massage. The types guide calls Swedish or relaxation with oil the right first booking “every time,” and the tẩm quất guide itself advises something gentler for a first massage of any kind. A relaxation massage with oil, light to medium and never deep, is 290,000 ₫ for 60 minutes or 430,000 ₫ for 90.
Jet lag. Jet lag keeps its own clock, roughly one day per time zone crossed, as our guide to recovering from travel in Saigon explains. Cleveland Clinic’s overview of jet lag says many people feel better a few days after arriving, though some take up to a week to feel fully themselves. A massage is for the body that sat in the seat. The relaxation massage lists travel recovery among what it helps with, and hot stone, which uses heat instead of force, suits widespread stiffness at 340,000 ₫ or 460,000 ₫.
Pregnancy. Neither style without adjustment. Hill says Thai massage can suit pregnant women only “as long as we make adjustments to positioning,” and our tẩm quất guide recommends a pregnancy massage instead. Our side-lying pregnancy massage uses cushion support, never face-down, from the second trimester, with no heat, at 340,000 ₫ or 460,000 ₫.
How to Tell What You Are Walking Into
- Read the sign, not the word “massage.” “Thai” means a mat and stretching; tẩm quất means firm pressure and percussion; Massage Thư Giãn Tinh Dầu on a menu is a relaxation oil massage.
- Ask: mat or table, oil or not? The two answers tell all three apart.
- Confirm the price and duration at reception. Four checks that separate a legitimate spa from the rest can be run from your phone before you go.
- Answer the intake question properly. Mention blood thinners, recent surgery, a joint problem or pregnancy before you start, not halfway through.
- Agree on a pressure, and change it whenever you need to. In Thai massage, say when a stretch is far enough; in tẩm quất, aim for “strong but breathable,” and speak up at anything sharp or electric. How to ask for softer or firmer pressure in Vietnam has the words.
Etiquette: Clothes On or Clothes Off
For Thai massage nothing comes off; for tẩm quất you stay dressed or change into loose clothing the venue provides. For a day-spa oil massage you undress to your comfort level, usually to underwear, alone, and lie under a towel with only the area being worked on uncovered; what happens with undressing and draping has the detail. Everywhere, shoes come off at the entrance, and tipping is optional: ten percent is generous, handed to the therapist directly, as our guide to Vietnamese spa etiquette explains.
What Chạm Spa Offers, and What It Does Not
We do not offer Thai massage, and no treatment on our menu is named tẩm quất; for assisted stretching on a mat, a dedicated Thai venue will serve you better. We offer table-and-oil massage in private rooms: six treatments of 60 or 90 minutes, each beginning with a short conversation about where you hold tension and how firm you like the pressure. Four matter here:
- Relaxation Massage with Oil: Swedish-style flowing strokes, light to medium, 290,000 ₫ or 430,000 ₫.
- Deep Tissue Massage: slow, sustained pressure on specific areas, firm to strong, 340,000 ₫ or 460,000 ₫, weighed against the relaxation massage in our guide to deep tissue versus Swedish massage.
- Warm Candle Relaxation Massage: warm oil poured from a massage candle, light to medium, 340,000 ₫ or 460,000 ₫.
- Hot Stone Therapy Massage: heated basalt stones and oil, medium pressure, 340,000 ₫ or 460,000 ₫.
The nearest thing to Vietnamese tradition on our menu is the traditional add-ons, 50,000 ₫ each and added to a massage: ginger scraping, a herbal patch or infrared warmth, rather than percussion. All six massages and their prices are on one page.
Thai Massage vs Vietnamese Massage: Decide Before You Walk In
Think of the verb. In Thai massage you are stretched and compressed, clothed, on a mat. In tẩm quất you are pressed and tapped, firmly. In a day-spa oil massage you lie still under long strokes or slow pressure. None is the real one; each answers a different request. Ask “mat or table, oil or not?” before you pay, and you will know which you are getting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Thai and Vietnamese Massage
Thai Massage vs Vietnamese Massage: Which One Is Firmer?
Both are firm. Our types guide rates Thai massage as firm and tẩm quất as firm to very firm, so tẩm quất usually presses harder, while Thai is intense in a different way, through stretching. A day-spa oil massage runs from light to medium for relaxation to firm to strong for deep tissue.
Do You Undress for a Thai Massage?
No. Thai massage is done fully clothed, in lightweight, loose clothing, and without oil; ask when booking whether the venue provides a set. Tẩm quất is usually clothed too, while a day-spa oil massage means undressing to your comfort level under a towel.
Does Chạm Spa Offer Thai Massage or Tẩm Quất?
No Thai massage, and no treatment named tẩm quất; for Thai, book a dedicated Thai venue. Our six table-and-oil massages start at 290,000 ₫ for 60 minutes, and our traditional add-ons, 50,000 ₫ each, draw on Vietnamese traditional methods such as ginger scraping and herbal patches.
Is Thai Massage a Good Idea With a Stiff Shoulder or Hip?
General stiffness is what Thai massage suits. An existing shoulder or hip joint problem is different: the therapist interviewed by Cleveland Clinic says it may not be one to try straight away, given its emphasis on stretching and range of motion. Ask your doctor first, and tell the therapist before you start.
After a Long-Haul Flight, Should You Book Thai Massage or an Oil Massage?
A calm oil massage is the gentler choice after hours in one seat: the relaxation massage lists travel recovery among what it helps with, and hot stone works on widespread stiffness with heat instead of force. Thai massage is considerably more physically involving, so if you book it, say you have just flown in. A history of blood clots means speaking to a doctor before any massage.
Can You Have Thai Massage or Tẩm Quất While Pregnant?
Not without adjustments. Thai massage positions have to change by trimester, and our tẩm quất guide recommends a dedicated pregnancy massage instead. Chạm Spa’s Pregnancy Massage is side-lying with cushion support, never face-down, from the second trimester, with no heat treatments.
Does UNESCO’s Listing Mean Thai Massage Is Proven to Work?
No. UNESCO inscribed Nuad Thai in 2019 as intangible cultural heritage, which recognizes a living tradition, not clinical evidence. Wikipedia’s article puts it plainly: massage of any type, Thai included, can help people relax and temporarily ease muscle or joint pain, but many practitioners’ claims “go far beyond” what clinical study has shown.
